Trouble For Hancock

An article on Cinemablend informs us that Will Smith’s superhero movie Hancock may be headed for reshoots. The movie’s world premiere, which had been scheduled to happen next month in Australia, has been cancelled. Considering that the film opens in six weeks, this does not bode well for the production. Hopefully these reshoots will only make the film better, and not water it down or make it less edgy and more broad as a result of some stupid test audience screening gone wrong.

On July 2nd, A.K.A. “Will Smith Weekend,” we’ll know for sure when Hancock takes flight.

The Joker One Sheet May 16 2008

The publicity machine continues to burn full steam ahead for The Dark Knight. The last few days have seen the introduction of yet another one-sheet featuring The Joker as well as a new TV spot. The new commercial includes some never-before seen moments from the film, due July 18th.

Hey, what is it with The Joker and Indiana Jones? The last time either of them were on the screen was Summer ‘89. Nineteen long years later, they both decide to come back at the same time. Could this mean we have Indy V and a new Joker to look forward to in 2027? Not if George Lucas has his way. He envisions the next installment of the Indiana Jones saga a lot sooner than that! Only problem is, it just might not have a lot of Indy in it. Click HERE and have that smile on your face instantly turn upside down as you enter Lucas’ vision: “I have an idea to make Shia the lead character next time and have Harrison come back like Sean Connery did in the last movie. I can see it working out.”

Spidey 4 and 5

A year after the less-than-Amazing Spidey 3 swung into theaters and Sony seems to be looking into the future of our favorite webslinger.

Cinematical reports that James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) has turned in a working draft of Spider-Man 4 to the studio and that “his story arc has encompassed two films, making Spider-Man 5 shootable at the same time. The studio saw dollar signs and is in the process of reworking his deal to snatch up the story arc.”

No word on if Sam, Tobey and Kirsten would return, but it seems highly unlikely as all three have claimed they were done with the saga after part 3 last summer.

Stay tuned…

City of Ember

Here’s the trailer for 20th Century Fox and Walden Media’s ‘City of Ember,’ starring Bill Murray, Toby Jones, Saoirse Ronan, Tim Robbins, and Martin Landau.

For generations, the people of the City of Ember have flourished in an amazing world of glittering lights. But Ember’s once powerful generator is failing--and the great lamps that illuminate the city are starting to flicker. Now, two teenagers in a race against time, must search Ember for clues that will unlock the ancient mystery of the city’s existence, and help the citizens escape before the lights go out forever.

Bill Murray in City of Ember

Okay, so lemme get this straight. Bill Murray won’t go near Ghostbusters 3 (unless it just involves lending his voice to a game) but he has no quams signing on to play “The Mayor of Ember” in a new Walden Media production, a company who has had no luck with any of their pictures besides The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe? (And trust me, Caspian will not be added to their hit list after it lets down audiences this weekend). I just want to make sure I’ve got this right about Bill. Sorry, I get confused sometimes. However, being the optimist that I am, I will choose to still have faith in Murray’s choice and eagerly anticipate this October 10th release, since it happens to be directed by Gil Kenan, who brought us the awesome Monster House.

James Cameron LOVES 3D

According to a press release, Vince Pace, one of the thought leader’s in 3D entertainment, will be joined by legendary filmmaker and partner, James Cameron, to participate in two 3D panels being held today at The American Pavilion during this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The two innovators of the PACE/Cameron Fusion 3D system and world renown leaders in 3D production will participate in the “New Dimensions For 3D” panel and the “New Technology Driving Digital 3D” panel via Skype video call from the Los Angeles production stage of James Cameron’s feature film “Avatar” where Paceis currently serving as Director of Photography.

“New Dimensions For 3D: How Digital 3D Will Shape Movie Production and Distribution During the Next 20 Years” will explore production, distribution, finance and the impact on exhibition. “New Technology Driving Digital 3D” will be a special seminar on how new tools are emerging to adapt for the new 3D cinema experience. Issues to be discussed include camera systems, editing equipment, computer servers, special effects, anti-piracy software and more.

Pace and Cameron have been working together since 1988 on the production of
The Abyss. In 2001 Cameron came to Pace with the desire to build “the holy
grail” of cameras. The challenge was to design a stereoscopic acquisition
system that would reinvent the entertainment experience by providing imagery
that mimics the human experience. The two thought leaders accomplished this
feat by throwing out the mathematics that previously drove and hindered 3D
production; replacing it with the creatively driven tool known today as the
first camera in the Fusion System line - blurring the line between having
seen it and having been there.

James Cameron is on track to once again revolutionize the industry with the
release of AVATAR in 2009. This release is expected to be the turning point
for 3D. AVATAR will be the first feature film release from Mr. Cameron since
the monumental release of Titanic, which remains the highest grossing film
to date. AVATAR is in production utilizing the revolutionary Fusion systems.

With credits such as Director of Photography on AVATAR, Executive Producer
on Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both World’s Concert film and
holding his full time position as CEO of PACE, Vince Pace continues to push
entertainment boundaries to new levels. In the last several years, Vince has
led PACE to tremendous success with Fusion 3D credits on virtually every
noteworthy 3D production to date. PACE credits include groundbreaking
projects such as “Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds,” “U23D”
and “Journey to the Center of the Earth." PACE has also, nearly
single-handedly, blazed the trail for the new genre of 3D sports exhibition
as the only company with three live 3D broadcasts utilizing dynamic systems
via fiber and satellite links. All three events partnered with the NBA.

The Incredible Hulk Trailer #3

Posted by Cybergosh on 05/15 at 12:28 PM

Cinema Blend alerts us that a third trailer for The Incredible Hulk has popped up on YouTube. The trailer follows the Indiana Jones marketing strategy of simply rehashing bits we’ve seen before in a new order, with an occasional new shot or line of dialogue thrown in to make us feel like this is “new.” Still, we can’t deny how fun it is to watch the Hulk smash those two cars together. They can cut that into as many trailers as they want and we’ll still cheer like we’re seeing it for the first time come June 13th!

UK Box Office Breakdown: Speed Racer Tanks

UK Box Office Breakdown: Speed Racer Tanks
Wachowski bro's latest first casualty of the summer season.

Cripes! The bloodthirsty summer movie season has its first big-budget flop of the summer, and we're only two weeks in. The disappointment, no scrap that, disaster in question is the Wachowski brother latest effort Speed Racer, which had designs on taking Iron Man's top spot, but instead, only came in a lowly fourth...

Getting piped to the post by Jon Favreau's comic adaptation, which has found a huge audience thanks to a combination of a charismatic, likeable leading man and a fizzy, funny tone, is not unexpected. But limping in behind the likes of What Happens in Vegas... and Forgetting Sarah Marshall (which has been on release for three weeks) represents a shocking return for the iconoclastic directorial siblings and uber-producer Joel Silver. In fact, the film made less than a £800per screen - pretty shocking compared to the £3500+ raked in by Iron Man.

So what went wrong? Well, the mixed reviews certainly didn't help; whilst many admired the delirious, barmy visual stylings of the film, many more were annoyed by the less-than-complex plot and characterisation and general cartoony tone (with some hacks obviously forgetting it was based on a Japanese anime and was made for kids...).

We think however it may have been Warner Brother's marketing strategy for the movie, with the studio targeting too broad a base and ultimately capturing no-ones imagination. Traditional fans of the Wachowski's previous effort The Matrix trilogy were almost certainly put off by the Speed Racers more childish moments (forum monkeys have been 'flaming' the film and giving it 'bad buzz' for months), while maybe not enough was done to woo the film's natural audience -- families with pre-teen kids. Indeed a summer or Easter holiday release would have perhaps been a better bet for the film's chances... too late now of course.

Elsewhere another similarly-hard-to-market film also made a disappointing run at the British public, with Neil Marshall's Doomsday also failing to garner much interest from Joe Public. The director of top horror flicks the Descent and Dog Soldiers was given more money for his latest effort, but many thought he wasted it on a collection of flashy set pieces with out much interlinking plot in between. This post-apocalyptic tale, which borrowed liberally from Mad Max, Escape from New York and many more, only made it to sixth place in the charts.

Casting Call: ‘Beavis & Butt-Head, The Live-Action Movie’

Casting Call: ‘Beavis & Butt-Head, The Live-Action Movie’

Published by Larry Carroll .

Beavis & Butt-HeadIn the eyes of an entire generation, man’s eternal struggle to define himself and his purpose is best summed up by nine immortal words.

“I am Cornholio! I need T.P. for my bunghole!”

Recently, we were able to get a rare interview with Mike Judge, the creator of such pop-culture goodies as “Beavis & Butt-Head,” “Office Space,” “Idiocracy” and “King of the Hill.” In addition to unearthing major details about his next film “Extract,” Judge told us that Beavis & Butt-head are making their return in a brief intro to Volume 3 of his cartoon festival “Animation Show,” and could soon become a live-action movie.

“For some reason, I used to hate the idea for years,” he said of a “Beavis & Butt-head” movie starring two living, breathing, heh-heh-heh-ing actors. “Now, I think maybe there’s something there.”

Naturally, the next step is imagining two actors who could step into the roles. (Click here for more of Judge’s thoughts on a live-action B&&B movie)

My first thought was to imagine Seann William Scott as Beavis, and although he might be getting a bit old, I can still imagine him pulling his t-shirt up over his head and calling upon “The Almighty Bunghole.” Judge agreed with the name but wanted Scott to play the other half of the duo, reasoning: “I guess Seann William Scott’s kinda got Butt-Head eyes.”

Judge also remembered that Johnny Depp once wanted to play Beavis – with Marlon Brando as Butt-Head! For my money, I could see Topher Grace as Butt-Head, slapping Seann William Scott upside the head and dismissively muttering “dumb-ass.” Then again, Jon Heder would seem to have been born for the role.

Dust off that casting couch, my fellow Burger World employees, and tell me what you think: Is a live-action “Beavis & Butt-Head” movie a good idea? What actors would you cast in the main roles?

The Dark Knight Joker Vs. KOTCS Indy

Although it might not the be the nicest fact in the world to report, it seems that the untimely death of actor Heath Ledger has definitely benefited The Dark Knight action figure line.

According to the New York Post, droves of people lined up early at the Toys “R” Us store in Times Square last week to get their hands on the first Joker figure with the likeness of Heath Ledger from the upcoming Batman sequel.
Empty Joker Pegs At Target

“There are none left in the warehouse, either. You will be waiting a while if you want one,” one store employee said.

The hard-to-get Jokers, which retail for $9.99, were already up for grabs on eBay - with one being sold as part of a $55 package with a Batman figure.

A Mattel spokeswoman said the action figures were delivered to some stores a week ago, but many stores are still waiting for shipments.

Harrison Ford Buys Indy Toys!

In other movie-toy news, none other than Harrison Ford was spotted emerging from a store with some of the new Indiana Jones toys in hand last week. ThisIsLondon.co.uk has the pictures, where it seems the star picked up at least one twelve-inch figure from the new Crystal Skull assortment. The only question is, did he buy Talking Indy or Whip Cracking Indy? Because we know he couldn’t have picked up a Mutt Williams figure. No one is buying Mutt. We can’t speak for the film itself, but as far as the action figure goes, Shia’s character is definitely the new Jar Jar.

We’ll all know if we want any of those Mutt Williams figures for our very own after the first show of The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, ONE WEEK from tonight!!

Point Break 2

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a sequel to “Point Break” is in the works.

RGM Entertainment and Essential Entertainment will exec produce “Point Break: Indo,” the follow-up to director Kathryn Bigelow’s original, which starred Keanu Reeves as an FBI agent tracking a gang of surfer bank robbers. The new film will take place twenty years after the disappearance of one of the criminal surfers (Patrick Swayze).

This is fantastic news...for no one. Unless, of course, you happen to be either Jan De Bont (Speed 2: Cruise Control), who comes out of obscurity to direct the second unwanted sequel of his career, or Danny Butterman, the character played by Nick Frost in last year’s Hot Fuzz.

One bit of hope, for lack of a better word, is that this sequel will be written by
W. Peter Iliff, the same mind who gave us the original. Plot details and possible character reprises have not been disclosed.

Harvey Weinstein Invades Fraggle Rock

The twenty-five year long wait for a Fraggle Rock movie has come to an end...at the belly of Harvey Weinstein.

From Variety --

The Weinstein Co. will turn the Jim Henson series “Fraggle Rock” into a live-action musical feature.Cory Edwards, who directed the animated “Hoodwinked!” for TWC, will helm the picture and write the screenplay. The Jim Henson Co. will produce and TWC will distribute.

“One of our main priorities when we first launched the Weinstein Company was to feature a broad range of family-friendly franchises like ‘Fraggle Rock,’ Harvey Weinstein said.

Just like the series, the film will be populated by a mix of human characters and Fraggle Rock puppets. TWC co-chair Harvey Weinstein, who has been steering his company more aggressively into the family film arena, made the marriage with Lisa Henson, who runs JHC with her co-CEO brother, Brian Henson. Ahmet Zappa will be exec producer with Brian Inerfeld.

According to the article, the Fraggle movie will take the core characters Gobo, Wembley, Mokey, Boober and Red outside of their home in Fraggle Rock, where they interact with humans, which they think are aliens. The show premiered on HBO in 1983, ran five seasons and was broadcast in more than 80 countries. It posted strong sales recently when the first three seasons were released on DVD.

Doozers, please—we need you. It sounds like they’re going to need all the help they can get with this project! I have a badddddd feeling about this.

This is the official last sign that the end of the world as we know it is upon us. According to Variety, Nicolas Cage will star in an updated version of the 1992 classic “Bad Lieutenant,” with Werner Herzog directing, Edward R. Pressman producing and Avi Lerner’s Nu Image/Millennium Films financing.

The original film, also produced by Pressman, starred Harvey Keitel and was directed by Abel Ferrara from a screenplay by Ferrara and Zoe Lund.

The film followed a depraved New York police officer who was heavily involved in drugs, gambling, sex and stealing. The film received an NC-17 rating.

The new script’s penned by Billy Finkelstein, a TV writer with credits on Murder One, Law & Order and NYPD Blue. Stephen Belafonte, who brought Finkelstein to the project, is also producing, while development was financed by producers Alan and Gabe Polsky.

Nic Cage

I’m happy to see that Cage is redeeming himself after Ghost Rider, Wicker Man, Next, and the National Treasure dynamic duo. It’s refreshing to see Nic go back to stretching himself as an actor and choosing projects that are intellectually intense. I know he will instill the public masturbation scene with the wit, class and gravity it deserves.

Kevin Conroy On Giving Batman A Voice

Kevin Conroy On Giving Batman A Voice

Posted by Cybergosh on 05/14 at 06:34 PM
Batman, as depicted in one of the six segments of Batman Gotham Knight

Courtesy of Warner Home Video, here is a revealing Q&A with
Kevin Conroy, the long-standing, beloved voice of Batman for the past
17 years in some 16 animated projects from Warner Bros. Conroy reprises his role as The Dark Knight in “Batman Gotham Knight,” the upcoming DC Universe animated original movie.

“Batman Gotham Knight”
will arrive July 8, 2008 on DVD and Blu-Ray
disc, and will also be available that day On Demand via digital cable
and for download through broadband sites. The film is produced as a
collaboration between DC Comics, Warner Premiere, Warner Home Video
and Warner Bros. Animation. The film will receive its world premiere
at Wizard World Chicago in late June.

From his home in New York City, Conroy spoke at length about the film,
his ongoing relationship with the character, and the surprising manner
in which he first approached and procured the role of Batman.

Kevin Conroy had studied for and starred on the stage, advanced his
career through soap operas, and was featured in television series like
“Dynasty” and “Tour of Duty.” He had no idea that stepping into a
sound booth in 1991 to audition for his first cartoon voiceover role
would forever cement his place in the annals of animation and help to
extend the Batman legacy to untold legions of fans.

Conroy quickly became the Batman voice by which all others are judged
– and rarely assessed as an equal. He has cast a loud shadow in
voicing the Dark Knight and Bruce Wayne for 17 years, beginning with
“Batman: The Animated Series” and continuing through 16 films, video
games and animated series (covering more than 220 episodes). He
reprises the role in triumphant fashion in “Batman Gotham Knight,” the
highly-anticipated third film in the ongoing series of DC Universe
animated original PG-13 movies.

Question:
What are your impressions of the film?

Kevin Conroy:
It’s a really rich experience. The artwork in this film is so
beautiful, so amazing. I love the adult-themed animated shows like
“The Simpsons” and “South Park” and “King of the Hill.” I love the
appeal of their writing, the irony, the sense of humor. Those are
great animated productions. But you forget just how rich animation
artwork can be until you see a film like this. There’s just no
comparison. I’ve never seen anything like this in terms of diverse and
rich animation in the industry – it’s like getting six movies in one.

The story is very interesting, especially the way it weaves in and out
of Bruce Wayne’s history – like the flashback to him training in
India, learning to endure pain. It’s very well conceived story and I
think it enhances a lot of the Batman mythology.

I don’t think there’s any question the fans will love it, because it’s
such a deep animation experience, and it gives such great background
into a character they already love. It’s a very positive piece.

After three years away from the character, what were the challenges of
donning the cape once again?

Kevin Conroy:
Getting back into the Batman voice was not hard – after so many years,
it’s so familiar to me now that it’s like putting on an old coat. As
you live with a character over the years, you fill out the skin. You
don’t even realize you’re doing it. Sometimes they ask during a
recording session, “What sound would Batman make here?” or “What would
he say here” and they trust me to do that. They know I’ve been living
with him for so long, I know what he’d say, and how he’d react.

Batman Gotham Knight has essentially 12 different looks at your
characters – nine of Batman and three of Bruce Wayne, varying in
design and age range. Were there any challenges to maintaining the
consistency of your performance despite voicing to so many different
image variations?

Kevin Conroy:
In the past, we’ve always treated the shows like a radio play – we
recorded the lines and then the animation took place. This time, the
artwork came first, and that made the process interesting. Sometimes
the artists put extra mouth flaps in, or they made the cadence
different from the way I’d usually deliver a line. So we had to work
within those parameters and try to time the acting to fill the space.

Interestingly, they originally they were going to cast another actor
to do the younger Bruce Wayne, and Andrea (Romano) convinced them to
let me take a stab at it. I had done the younger voice in a number of
the “Batman: The Animated Series” flashbacks, so Andrea knew that I
could do it. And once I got into the studio and gave them a sample,
they were convinced. The challenge is making the distinctions – you
have to make concessions for youth and give the character the sound of
a younger man, while still believably being the same guy.

At its core, this film represents several different perspectives of
Batman, providing many different layers to the character. Can you
discuss that range of emotions the film explores, and to what depths
you reach to capture those emotions?

Kevin Conroy:
It’s that delicate balance you get in voices. As an actor, it’s still
the same job – it’s acting – except that you only have your voice, and
you have to be a little more precise in finding the balance. You have
to keep it very minimal and you don’t want to be too cartoony, but at
the same time you only have your voice to tell the story – so you have
to juice it up a bit. Sometimes the hardest acting is in the
non-dialogue aspects of the performance. As an example, there was one
long scream when Batman is falling down a series of ladders into a
pit. They recorded that over and over and over again, trying to figure
out how to do it just right, and not overdue it. I had to give them
lots of variations and I’m sure they picked the best one later.
Overall, it was a little challenging with the different artistic
styles and the different stories, but it was still Batman.

The legions of Batman animation fans have hailed you as the definitive
voice of the character. How did you originally settle on that
particular voice?

Kevin Conroy:
To tell the truth, after reading the original script, I really went to
audition for the character voices – like Commissioner Gordon and
Harvey Bullock. Like most actors, I really love to be challenged, and
I thought they’d be more interesting and really push me. And then
Bruce (Timm) and Andrea (Romano) said they wanted to hear me do
Batman. The only exposure I’d had was the campy Adam West live-action
series, and they said that wasn’t what they wanted. So I put myself
into a very dark place in my voice, and my voice got deeper and darker
and huskier, and it came out very mysterious. I really just took a
stab at what I thought the voice would be, and then I saw Bruce and
Andrea and Paul (Dini) running around the booth, so I knew I either
was very good or very bad. That’s how it started—just me in a sound
booth, them on the other side of the glass describing the character,
and then the voice just came out of my imagination. And it worked. So
initially I was much more interested in doing the character voices,
but luckily they talked me into Batman.

Do you require a certain mindset to approach the voice of Batman?

Kevin Conroy:
There’s an emotional place I go to – Bruce (Timm) says he see it in me
in the booth. It’s much more a psychology than just producing the
sound. Batman is very complex. The Bruce Wayne voice is the real
put-on. This is a guy who saw his parents murdered in front of him,
and nobody would be normal and together after that. He feels like a
freak inside. So to do the voice, you have to take on all that drama.

That’s why everyone relates to Batman – because everyone feels like a
freak inside. Everyone has ghosts that they don’t want to show anyone
else. All of us feel like we have that inside us. For me, that’s one
of the most interesting aspects of the character – that a super hero
would ultimately be based on that inner-freak that we all feel that we
have.

In your mind, what’s special about playing Batman?

Kevin Conroy:
I think what I didn’t anticipate about voicing Batman was the fact
that I was playing an icon – I just didn’t take into account how much
Batman meant to so many people. Coming from a very conservative
background, and not having extensive exposure to comic books and the
character, it just never occurred to me. So in the beginning, I only
thought of it as an acting job.

And now … you’re an icon in the Batman universe?

Kevin Conroy:
I’m always flattered that people actually know who the voices are. It
seems to me such an anonymous job. But periodically, somebody
recognizes me – it happened in a furniture store recently. To me,
that’s truly amazing – first that someone knows who does the voice,
and it’s even more amazing that someone would know the face of the
voice. I think a lot of the reason that I’m so linked to Batman is
because I’ve been doing it for so long. Before “Batman: The Animated
Series,” there really hadn’t been a voice aside from Adam West. People
knew Batman from the campy live action series, and the fans knew the
Dark Knight comic books, but there hadn’t been a voice associated with
the character, and certainly not a dramatic voice. I think I just
lucked out because I was the one who started with it, and people grew
up with that voice.

Concept Art

The Character Design Blog has posted some cool character concept art for some of the upcoming Pixar projects announced a few weeks back, as well as a still “The Princess and the Frog,” Disney’s return to feature-length traditional animation.

Most interesting to me are the designs for Pixar’s “The Bear and the Bow,” a Scottish fantasy from filmmaker/writer Brenda Chapman (“The Prince of Egypt”). The film is not due until Christmas 2011 but here we have our first look at a few of the main characters who will star in Pixar’s first fairy tale.

Eve

Speaking of character design, an article in Fortune states that the design for the character Eve in Wall•E was inspired by the look of such Apple products as the iPod. Andrew Stanton, Wall•E’s director, told Fortune. “The more I started describing it, the more I realized I was pretty much describing the Apple playbook for design.”

The EVE-pod joins Wall•E in theaters June 27th.

Lincoln and Tintin for Spielberg in 2009

FilmSchoolRejects.com reports that Spielberg’s Tintin is expected to go into production this September and the motion-captured film will be the first animated film he’s been at the helm of.

After that it’s on to his long-in-development Lincoln which will most likely star Qui Gon as Honest Abe. Variety claims that Spielberg has told the German weekly magazine FOCUS that he will return his attention to the epic project about the 16th president for a DreamWorks film that could begin filming possibly by early next year. Screen Daily reports that Spielberg will begin shooting the biopic at the beginning of 2009 “so that it can also open in the same year as Lincoln’s 200th anniversary which comes round then.”

So start cashing in your tin cans and saving your pennies because it’s a good guess we’ll be buying tickets for Tintin next summer and Lincoln in December of ‘09.

In perusing all of the releases for the best and worst in DVD box art, I've discovered a bizarre and slightly troubling phenomenon. Many current and upcoming horror films have a thing for, uh, things coming out of faces.

Take a look at the packaging for these thrillers. I imagine the next horror movie using this format will be about a monster crawling out of someone's nostril. They can call it Boogeyman.

The official Comic Con website's free online magazine has the first picture of Sam Jackson as The Octopus in next year's Spirit movie.

Also in the issue, a look at how Wondercon 2008 raised the roof in San Francisco. I was at this year's Wondercon and certainly no roofs were raised as far as I could tell. Maybe a brick fell off the side of the building but that's about it.

There's also a big interview with Frank Miller, who has managed to level up to Demi-God status without ever having to play a module or roll a 20s die.

More features include Comic Con 2008's special guests letting us know what they're reading, an article on costume construction for all of you special needs people who insist on dressing up like a super hero or anime character, embarrassing both yourself and your family name.

Rounding out the 10.65 mb PDF download are Comic Con tips and tricks for you first timers who feel like being fashionable in your outdated Venom t-shirts, and a rundown of the conventions exhibitors and artists.

Captain America's Shield

The folks at FirstShowing.net have claimed to have spotted an Easter egg of sorts an hour and a half into Iron Man. It seems that none other than Captain America’s shield can be seen inside Tony Stark’s workshop! While this has not been officially confirmed and Marvel backstory would go against it, it appears as though it is indeed there. The A-TEAM and THOR movie updates!

The A-TEAM and THOR movie updates!

The A-Team dies hard, while Marvel wants Achilles to become the Prince of Asgard!

A lot of bees buzzing in Hollywood so check it...

...from what I'm hearing, for John Singleton's upcoming remake of THE A-TEAM, they're looking at Bruce Willis for the role of Col. John "Hannibal" Smith, the leader of the A-TEAM. I love it when a plan comes together!

Meanwhile, over at Marvel, the name they are tossing around to pick up Thor's mighty hammer is Brad Pitt! A solid choice.

Keep in mind, NO OFFER HAS BEEN MADE TO PITT YET!

Mark Petrosevich wrote one hell of a draft which they are in the process of trimming down for budgetary reasons. Not for nothing, with the acting chops that Downey Jr brought over to Iron Man, it's understandable why Marvel wants to go after a reputable name like Pitt - they're gonna need someone who can act. I personally loved Pitt's bad ass characterization of Achilles in Troy, so I think Pitt could pull off Thor. Marvel is not going to be typical and go after the John Cenas, Chris Jerichos and Tyler Manes of the world. That would be corny.

Could Brad Pitt, like Johnny Depp and Robert Downey Jr before him, be feeling the mid life urge to act in a movie for his children to enjoy now that he is a dotting dad? Only time will tell, but first I think Marvel needs to lock down a director.

Stay tuned as more develops!

Indiana Jones Is Battling the Long Knives of the Internet

Published: May 10, 2008

LOS ANGELES — Now comes the part where Indiana Jones dangles over the snake pit of public opinion.

David James/Paramount Pictures

Harrison Ford in the coming "Indiana Jones" film.

David James/Paramount Pictures

Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford on the "Indiana Jones" set.

Actually, a handful of Web reviewers have already struck at the film “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” despite an intense effort by the director Steven Spielberg, the executive producer George Lucas and Paramount Pictures to keep this highly anticipated sequel out of sight until Sunday, May 18.

On that day, this fourth Indiana Jones movie is scheduled to make its debut at the Cannes Film Festival with an afternoon press screening, and another one at night.

At about the same time, the picture, which opens in theaters on the following Thursday, is expected to be screened for the news media and industry insiders at multiple showings in Manhattan and Los Angeles, while other screenings are scheduled around the world.

Mr. Spielberg is unusually fastidious when it comes to protecting his films from advance word that can diminish excitement or muddy a message planted by months of carefully orchestrated publicity and expensive promotions (including, in this case, a February cover article in Vanity Fair, complete with Annie Leibovitz photos of the cast, and leather bullwhips delivered weeks ago to newsrooms).

Mr. Spielberg customarily avoids leaky test screenings. Even Marvin Levy, his publicist of more than 30 years, said he had not yet seen the new movie.

Still, there it was, at 6:42 a.m. on Thursday: a harshly critical review on aintitcoolnews.com, from a poster who identified himself as “ShogunMaster.” Rife with details from the film, the review said, “This is the Indiana Movie that you were dreading.”

By that afternoon two other less critical, but less than sparkling, reviews also appeared on the Web site.

The man who posted as ShogunMaster, reached via the Web site, said he is a theater executive who saw the film at an exhibitors’ screening this week. He spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid reprisal from the studio.

Paramount had shown the film to a handful of theater company executives at its Los Angeles lot and elsewhere.

Movie studios increasingly tend to protect their biggest bets from advance showings. Two years ago, for instance, Sony Pictures screened “The Da Vinci Code” for critics at the Cannes Film Festival only two days before its opening in the United States. But exhibitors’ screenings can open a window for determined reviewers.

Such screenings are required in about two dozen states that have laws against blind-bidding, a practice in which theater owners were once asked to bid on films they had not seen.

As a practical matter, there is little or no actual bidding in the contemporary theater business, which relies instead on negotiations between distributors and theater owners. But distributors continue to hold screenings for theater company executives in the weeks before a film’s release, whether as a courtesy or as a way to avoid conflict with a patchwork of state laws.

Theater executives may have an incentive to play down a movie’s prospects after such a screening, to get better terms. In any case, many fans will most likely flock to “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” if only to make their own judgments about Mr. Spielberg’s decision to revisit the franchise fully 19 years after its last installment. Still, bad notices could keep the more ambivalent moviegoers from attending and thwart a truly huge box office haul.

According to Mr. Levy, who spoke by telephone on Thursday, Mr. Spielberg has kept a watchful eye on virtually every aspect of the film’s marketing campaign. “He gets involved with everything,” Mr. Levy said. “Every TV spot, every line in every ad, every advertising concept.” (Among the marketing tie-ins were Indiana Jones fedoras, available at Blockbuster stores.)

The current campaign has been engineered to create excitement around the opening date, May 22 — some billboards feature the date, in flame-colored letters, and little else — without telling too much about the film. Last year the movie’s producers went so far as to file a lawsuit against a bit player who had publicly discussed the film’s plot, which involves the exploits of an aging archaeological adventurer, still played by Harrison Ford, now 65.

The campaign has been effective so far. Fandango, which sells film tickets online, said this week that it was “seeing brisk advance ticket sales” to “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” identified as the summer’s most anticipated film in a poll Fandango conducted of moviegoers.

But a better gauge of success is likely to be the extent of online sales in the few days after the film screens at Cannes — and after many reviewers have weighed in.

Tim Ryan, a senior editor at Rottentomatoes.com, which compiles film reviews, said he expected those of “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” to surface “maybe an hour or two” after the Sunday afternoon press screening in France. His company will have someone on hand to post them immediately, Mr. Ryan said.

As rated by Rottentomatoes, the earlier “Indiana Jones” films enjoyed strong reviews. The worst-reviewed of the three — the second, “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” released in 1984 — was still the third-most-popular movie of the year.

Mr. Spielberg, Mr. Levy said, may not be the first to know if the aging Indy manages to wriggle past any negative early notices to score another hit. “When a movie opens, he usually disappears,” Mr. Levy said. “He usually doesn’t want to know all the details about how it’s doing.”

MGM turns on the 'Hot Tub' jets

MGM turns on the 'Hot Tub' jets

Josh Heald penned the comedy

By Borys Kit

May 12, 2008, 01:00 AM

MGM is getting wet with "Hot Tub Time Machine," a comedy project from scribe Josh Heald.

Former New Line exec Matt Moore will serve as a producer on the project.

"Hot Tub" follows a group of guys, adults who used to be cads back in their heyday, who, after a night of vodka and Red Bulls in a hot tub, travel back in time and set out to rediscover their "mojo."

"We're always looking for ways to stand out from the rest of the pack in today's crowded marketplace, and what better way than to combine hot tub debauchery and the complications of time travel," said MGM exec vp production Cale Boyter, who will oversee the project along with the company's Becky Sloviter.

Boyter, who had been with New Line for 10 years, worked at the company with Moore, who during his tenure oversaw such projects as "All About the Benjamins" and "Next Friday" as well as the "Final Destination" franchise. It was at New Line that Moore established a relationship with Heald, who wrote "All You Can Eat" for the studio. "Eat" now is at Rogue.

Heald, repped by Paradigm and Mason Novick of MXN, is writing "Mardi Gras" for Screen Gems. The comedy begins production May 19 with Phil Dornfeld at the helm.

Audrina Patridge joins 'Into the Blue' sequel

By Borys Kit

May 12, 2008, 01:00 AM

Audrina Patridge has landed her first film role.

"The Hills" star has joined the cast of "Into the Blue 2," MGM Home Entertainment and Bluewater Prods.' sequel to the Jessica Alba starrer.

The film revolves around Sebastion (Chris Carmack, "The O.C.") and Dani (Laura Vandervoort, "Smallville"), a married couple hired as professional divers to search for Columbus' hidden treasure. To their horror, they learn that their wealthy employers have a much more terrifying agenda.

Patridge will play a no-nonsense, beautiful beach babe whose boyfriend caters to her every command.

Charles Winkler is directing and producing. Hudson Hickman, Craig Roessler and Sarah Berrisford are executive producers.

Patridge, repped by APA and John Carrabino Management, is the first reality celeb from "The Hills" to get an acting role in a film. The show's Lauren Conrad appeared in the 2007 Regency comedy "Epic Movie" as herself.

"The Hills," MTV's highest-rated series, recently was picked up for a fourth season, which will debut in August.

The first "Blue," which MGM made with Columbia in 2005, took in a little more than $18 million at the U.S. boxoffice, then made a killing on DVD on the strength of a bikini-clad Alba and the ab-tastic Paul Walker.

Mission: Impossible IV??

Will Tom Run Back To Paramount For M:i:4?

Earlier this week, Sumner Redstone mentioned that he has no objection to Tom Cruise starring in a possible next installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise. The Viacom boss made the comment after speaking at the Seoul Digital Forum in the South Korean capital. In August of 2006, Redstone ended Paramount’s 14-year relationship with Cruise and his producing partner Paula Wagner and publicly criticized the actor’s behavior.

However, Cruise is now in talks with Paramount to star in a fourth “Mission: Impossible” film.

“I consider Tom Cruise a great actor and a good friend,” Redstone said. “And if Paramount decides to move ahead with him, I will not object.” He added that the decision was “up to Brad Grey, who runs Paramount.”

No word on who would helm the new Mission, but with J.J.’s hands full for the foreseeable future, Abrams’ return to the series, which he re-ignited two years ago, seems unlikely.

WatchMen

The second of twelve planned video journals offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the production of Zack Synder’s WATCHMEN is online at JoBlo.com. Starting last month, the 300 director began the journals which will premiere each month leading up to the release on March 6, 2009.

In the new installment, Snyder had this to say…

“To put it simply, there is an enormous amount of characters that populate the many time periods and environments of the Watchmen world. Although we encountered many challenges while making Watchmen, one of the most interesting and rewarding was creating the wardrobe for all of those people. This is the second time I’ve had the pleasure of working with Costume Designer Michael Wilkinson. Once again, I’m amazed by his talent and dedication. Take a look. -Zack”

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor charges into theaters on August 1, 2008!

The blockbuster global Mummy franchise takes a spellbinding turn as the action shifts to Asia for the next chapter in the adventure series, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Brendan Fraser returns as explorer Rick O’Connell to combat the resurrected Han Emperor (Jet Li) in an epic that races from the catacombs of ancient China high into the frigid Himalayas. Rick is joined in this all-new adventure by son Alex (newcomer Luke Ford), wife Evelyn (Maria Bello) and her brother, Jonathan (John Hannah). And this time, the O’Connells must stop a mummy awoken from a 2,000-year-old curse who threatens to plunge the world into his merciless, unending service.

Doomed by a double-crossing sorceress (Michelle Yeoh) to spend eternity in suspended animation, China’s ruthless Dragon Emperor and his 10,000 warriors have lain forgotten for eons, entombed in clay as a vast, silent terra cotta army. But when dashing adventurer Alex O’Connell is tricked into awakening the ruler from eternal slumber, the reckless young archaeologist must seek the help of the only people who know more than he does about taking down the undead: his parents.

As the monarch roars back to life, our hero finds his quest for world domination has only intensified over the millennia. Striding the Far East with unimaginable supernatural powers, the Emperor Mummy will rouse his legion as an unstoppable, otherworldly force...unless the O’Connells can stop him first. Now, in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the trademark thrills and visually spectacular action of the Mummy series will be redefined for a new generation.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is helmed by director Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious, xXx) and written by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (Spider-Man 2, television’s Smallville). Reprising their roles as producers in the series are Bob Ducsay, Sean Daniel, Stephen Sommers and James Jacks.
